Gujarat is the most underestimated state in India for travel, which is the most useful thing you can say about it: the traveller who goes expecting the Rajasthan experience and finds instead the Rann of Kutch at full moon is never the same kind of traveller afterwards.
This itinerary is built around the three territories that make Gujarat specific rather than merely different: the Rann of Kutch, the living craft villages of the Saurashtra coast, and the stepped wells and mosques and havelis of the medieval cities. Each requires a different kind of attention from the traveller and rewards it with a different kind of understanding — the Rann's reward is entirely sensory, the craft villages' is primarily social, the medieval cities' is architectural — and the combination of all three in a single journey produces an account of Gujarati culture that is more accurate than any single one could be.
The craft section of this itinerary — spending time in the Rabari embroidery villages of Kutch, the block-print workshops of Ajrakhpur, the weaving communities of Bhujodi — is the least comfortable and the most memorable part of the journey for most travellers. These are working communities, not heritage displays, and the appropriate posture is the one you bring to watching someone do something very difficult very well: attention, respect, and genuine curiosity about how it's done.
Fly into Ahmedabad and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free, with an optional evening visit to Sabarmati Ashram, Mahatma Gandhi's former residence on the banks of the Sabarmati River.
Drive roughly six hours to Bhuj, the gateway to the Kutch region, with a stop along the way to see traditional Kutchi handicrafts in one of the surrounding artisan villages.
Drive to Hodka village on the edge of the Great Rann of Kutch and check into a rustic tented camp. Spend the afternoon and evening on the salt flats themselves, timed for sunset when the white desert turns shades of orange and pink.
Visit Kalo Dungar (Black Hill), the highest point in Kutch, for a panoramic view over the white desert, then spend the afternoon visiting nearby traditional villages known for embroidery, pottery, and other Kutchi crafts.
A long drive of roughly seven hours to Dwarka, one of Hinduism's four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites, where the Dwarkadhish Temple's five-story tower rises on 72 pillars overlooking the Arabian Sea.
A morning boat trip to Bet Dwarka, an island temple complex just off the coast, followed by a drive to Somnath to visit one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, among the most sacred Shiva temples in India, rebuilt multiple times over its long history.
Drive to Sasan Gir, the only place on earth where Asiatic lions still live in the wild, and settle in for an afternoon jeep safari into the forest.
Morning and afternoon jeep safaris through Gir's dry deciduous forest, home not only to Asiatic lions but also leopards, hyenas, and over 300 bird species in one of India's richest wildlife sanctuaries.
A morning safari before checking out, followed by the drive or flight back to Ahmedabad, with an evening visit to the old city's stepwells and stone-carved mosques if time allows.
Transfer to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, for your onward or departing flight.
