The journey

Six days, three cities and the Taj Mahal at first light. This is the classic first trip to India, planned at a pace that leaves room to enjoy it.

The Golden Triangle links India's three most visited cities. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur sit at the corners of a rough triangle about 740 km around, joined by fast highways. In six days you see eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from the Taj Mahal and Humayun's Tomb to Fatehpur Sikri, Amber Fort and the Jantar Mantar, and Jaipur's walled Pink City is itself on the World Heritage list.

You spend two nights in Delhi, one in Agra and two in Jaipur. A private air-conditioned car and driver stay with you from the airport to the last day, and a licensed local guide joins you in each city. The longest drive is about five hours, broken by a stop at Fatehpur Sikri. On the last day we drive you back to Delhi's international airport, where most long-haul flights leave.

Every part of it can change. Add a night, swap the hotel style, add tigers at Ranthambore or the ghats of Varanasi. This page shows how we would plan it; your quote is built around you.

Best for

First-time visitors to India, couples and families with a week or less, and travellers on a stopover between Europe and Asia.

Good to know

The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday and the Red Fort every Monday. We set your dates so the Agra sunrise and the Delhi sightseeing fall on open days.

Day by day

Your 6 days, as we would plan them

Timings are a guide. Your driver and guides adjust each day to the weather, the crowds and how you feel.

01
Day 1 · Delhi

Arrive in Delhi

Airport to central Delhi: about 45 to 75 minutes

Your driver meets you outside the arrivals hall at Indira Gandhi International Airport, holding a sign with your name, and takes you to your hotel. If you need rupees or a local SIM, there are bank ATMs and phone counters in the arrivals area; your driver will wait.

After a long-haul flight, the best plan for day one is very little. Check in, rest and adjust to Indian time. If you land in the morning and feel fresh, take an easy afternoon walk in Lodhi Garden, where 15th-century tombs stand among lawns used by joggers and families, then dinner nearby at Khan Market or Lodhi Colony.

Keep the first dinner simple. Delhi is known for rich North Indian cooking, such as dal makhani and tandoori kebabs; for the first few days, stick to freshly cooked hot food and bottled or filtered water. Your coordinator calls or messages to welcome you, confirm tomorrow's start time and answer any questions.

  • ArrivalMeet and greet at the airport and private transfer to your hotel
  • AfternoonRest, or an optional walk in Lodhi Garden if you land early
  • EveningFree; we suggest an early night before a full day in Delhi

OvernightDelhi, 2 nights. See the hotel options below.

Day 2 · Delhi

Old and New Delhi

Full day with your guide; about 6 to 7 hours of sightseeing

Begin in Old Delhi, the walled city built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. Climb the steps of the Jama Masjid, one of India's largest mosques, then board a cycle-rickshaw for a ride through Chandni Chowk, a maze of lanes selling silver, saris, sweets and spices. Walk on to Khari Baoli, Asia's largest spice market, and pass the red sandstone walls of the Red Fort.

After lunch, cross into New Delhi. Humayun's Tomb, built in 1570, is the garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to the Qutub Minar, a 73-metre tower begun around 1200 and also UNESCO listed. Finish with a drive along Rajpath (now Kartavya Path), past the President's House and India Gate.

If you would like a quieter moment, add a visit to Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the Sikh temple whose community kitchen serves free meals to thousands of people every day.

  • MorningJama Masjid, cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli spice market, Red Fort
  • AfternoonHumayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar

Day 3 · Delhi → Agra

Agra Fort and the Taj at sunset

Delhi to Agra: 230 km, about 3.5 to 4 hours on the Yamuna Expressway

After breakfast, drive south to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway, one of India's fastest highways, with a coffee stop on the way. Check in to your hotel in time for a late lunch.

In the afternoon, explore Agra Fort, the Mughal emperors' red sandstone citadel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide shows you the marble palaces inside, including the octagonal tower where, by tradition, Shah Jahan spent his last years looking out at the Taj Mahal. If time allows, stop at the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, known as the Baby Taj, a jewel box of inlaid white marble.

As the sun sets, walk in Mehtab Bagh, the moonlit garden on the far bank of the Yamuna, for the classic view of the Taj Mahal across the river. Before dinner, try petha, Agra's translucent sweet made from ash gourd, and have an early night ready for tomorrow's sunrise start.

  • MorningDrive from Delhi to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway
  • AfternoonAgra Fort, and the Baby Taj if time allows
  • SunsetThe Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh across the river

Day 4 · Agra → Jaipur

The Taj Mahal at sunrise, then on to Jaipur

Agra to Jaipur: 240 km, about 5 hours with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri

Your guide collects you before dawn so you are at the gate when the Taj Mahal opens, 30 minutes before sunrise. Built between 1632 and 1653 by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, it changes colour with the light, from grey to pink to bright white. The first hour is the quietest and the most beautiful of the day.

Return to your hotel for breakfast, then drive west towards Rajasthan. After about an hour, stop at Fatehpur Sikri, the capital Emperor Akbar built in the 1570s and abandoned soon after. Walk through its palaces and courtyards and the great mosque with its 54-metre victory gate, the Buland Darwaza.

Continue to Jaipur, arriving in the late afternoon. If you would like one more stop, the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, a short detour from the highway, has thousands of steps in a perfect geometric pattern. The evening is free.

  • SunriseThe Taj Mahal with your guide as the gates open
  • Late morningFatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned Mughal capital
  • AfternoonDrive to Jaipur, with an optional stop at the Chand Baori stepwell

Day 5 · Jaipur

Amber Fort and the Pink City

Full day with your guide; Amber Fort is 11 km north of the city

Drive out early to Amber Fort, the hilltop palace of the Kachwaha rulers and part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Arriving early beats the heat and the tour buses. Walk up through its courtyards to the Sheesh Mahal, the Hall of Mirrors. We take you up by jeep; we do not book elephant rides. On the way back, stop to photograph the Jal Mahal, the Water Palace, floating in Man Sagar Lake.

In the afternoon, explore the old walled city, founded in 1727 and painted pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales. See the honeycomb façade of the Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds; the City Palace, still home to the former royal family; and the Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century astronomical observatory with a giant stone sundial, listed by UNESCO.

End with an hour in Johari and Bapu bazaars for jewellery, textiles and block-printed fabrics. If you have energy, watch the sunset from Nahargarh Fort above the city.

  • AfternoonHawa Mahal, City Palace and the Jantar Mantar

Day 6 · Jaipur → Delhi airport

Drive back to Delhi for your flight

Jaipur to Delhi airport: 270 km, about 5 to 6 hours

After a relaxed breakfast, drive back to Delhi, straight to the international airport. Please book a flight leaving after 6 pm to allow for traffic.

If you are flying on within India or to another country from Jaipur, we can end the tour at Jaipur airport instead and save you the drive. Many guests also extend the trip from here: Ranthambore for tigers, Udaipur for lakes and palaces, or Varanasi for the Ganges.

  • MorningBreakfast and check out

Tips for this journey

Best time to go

October to March is the best season, with warm days and cool nights. December and January can bring fog in Delhi and Agra in the early morning. April to June is very hot, often over 40°C, and July to September is the monsoon: humid, but quieter and cheaper.

Pace and walking

Moderate. Expect 3 to 5 km of walking on sightseeing days, with uneven paving, steps and ramps at the forts. It suits most ages; tell us about any mobility needs and we will adapt the plan.

Closing days
  • Taj Mahal: closed every Friday
  • Red Fort, Delhi: closed Mondays
  • Jama Masjid: closed to visitors at prayer times
What to wear

Light, loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees for mosques and temples. Shoes come off at the Jama Masjid and the Taj Mahal's mausoleum (shoe covers are given). Pack a warm layer for December and January mornings.

At the Taj Mahal

Bring only a small bag. Food, tripods, drones and large bags are not allowed, and photos are not permitted inside the main mausoleum. Your guide holds your tickets and handles the queues.

Questions

Before you book

Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp or use the form below. We reply within 24 hours.

How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle?

Six days is the comfortable minimum for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur: two nights in Delhi, one in Agra and two in Jaipur. With seven or eight days you can add a second night in Agra or a stop at Ranthambore for tigers.

Can I see the Taj Mahal on a Friday?

No. The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday. We plan your dates so the sunrise visit falls on another day, swapping the order of Delhi and Agra if needed.

How early is the Taj Mahal sunrise visit?

The gates open 30 minutes before sunrise, roughly 5:45 to 6:45 am between October and March. Your guide collects you about 20 minutes before opening. The first hour has the softest light and the fewest people.

Is the Golden Triangle a good first trip to India?

Yes. It covers India's most famous sights on good roads with short drives, and a private driver and guides take the stress out of arrival, traffic and tickets.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. You travel with your own car, driver and guides, whatever the size of your group. There are no fixed departures and no strangers on your trip.

Do you include an elephant ride at Amber Fort?

No. In line with our responsible travel policy, we take you up to Amber Fort by jeep instead.

Why does the tour end in Delhi rather than Jaipur?

Most long-haul flights to the US, UK, Europe and Australia leave from Delhi, so driving back is the simplest connection. If you are flying on within India, we can end at Jaipur airport and save you the drive.

Which hotel level do you recommend?

Most of our guests choose Comfort, which includes a heritage haveli in Jaipur. Premium adds a Taj-view hotel in Agra and a palace hotel in Jaipur.

How much should we tip the driver and guides?

A customary range is ₹300–700 a day for your driver and ₹500–1,000 for a full day with a guide, given at the end. It is voluntary. Our travel guide has the full table.

When is the best time to take this tour?

October to March is best. April to June is very hot; July to September is the monsoon, quieter and good value, with green landscapes.

How do booking and payment work?

Your itinerary costs nothing to design and change. A booking is confirmed once we receive the advance payment and confirm in writing; the balance is due before travel as set out in your invoice. Cancellation charges depend on the hotels and services booked and are given to you in writing before you pay.

Do I need a visa for India?

Most visitors do. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries can apply online for an Indian e-Tourist Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least four days before arrival.
