The journey

Three UNESCO-listed cave sites and a city of Gothic and Art Deco in five days, planned around the sites' weekly closures so you never meet a locked gate.

For more than a thousand years, Buddhist, Hindu and Jain communities in western India carved temples and monasteries out of solid rock. The greatest of them, at Ajanta and Ellora, are among the masterpieces of world art, and this short private tour is built to see them properly, with an expert guide at each site.

You spend two nights in Mumbai, with a morning ferry to the Shiva caves on Elephanta Island and a walk through the city's UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic and Art Deco quarter. Then you fly to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad, for two nights: Ellora and its great Kailasa temple one afternoon, Ajanta's painted caves the next full day.

On the last morning you see Bibi Ka Maqbara, the 'Taj of the Deccan', before flying back to Mumbai for your onward connection.

Best for

Travellers interested in art and architecture, and anyone combining a Mumbai stopover with a short trip inland.

Good to know

Elephanta and Ajanta close on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays, so your start day decides the order. The Ajanta day means about 5 hours in the car, and the caves involve steps.

Your 5 days, as we would plan them

Each day below shows travel times, what you will see and where you sleep. Because of the weekly closures, we may swap the order of the Ellora and Ajanta days to match your arrival date.

Day 1 · Mumbai

Arrive in Mumbai: the Oval Maidan and Marine Drive

Mumbai airport to South Mumbai: about 1 to 1.5 hours

Your driver meets you at Mumbai airport and takes you to your hotel in South Mumbai, the historic heart of the city. Depending on traffic, the drive along the sea link and the western seafront takes about an hour or more. Rest for a few hours after the flight.

In the late afternoon, walk the Oval Maidan, where cricket matches are played between two of the finest architectural ensembles in Asia: the Victorian Gothic High Court and University buildings on one side, with the Rajabai Clock Tower designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, and a row of 1930s Art Deco apartment blocks on the other, with curved balconies and ship-like details. Together they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Weekend afternoons are the liveliest time for cricket.

Finish at sunset on Marine Drive, the sweeping seafront promenade whose streetlights at night earned it the name 'the Queen's Necklace'. Walk north along the sea wall to Girgaum Chowpatty, the city beach at its end, for bhel puri or pav bhaji from the food stalls.

Day 2 · Mumbai

Elephanta Caves, Colaba and the CSMT terminus

Ferry from the Gateway of India to Elephanta: about 1 hour each way

Take the morning ferry from the Gateway of India, completed in 1924, across Mumbai harbour to Elephanta Island. Climb the steps to the caves, carved in the 5th to 7th centuries and dedicated to Shiva. The great hall holds the Sadashiva, a 6-metre carving of Shiva with three faces, as creator, preserver and destroyer, one of the masterpieces of Indian sculpture. Elephanta is closed on Mondays.

Back by early afternoon, walk through Colaba and the Kala Ghoda art district, past the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, opened in 1903, the Jehangir Art Gallery and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai's main museum, with fine Indian sculpture and miniature paintings.

End at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), the Victorian Gothic railway station completed in 1888 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, at rush hour, when thousands of commuters pour through it. If you are here at midday on a weekday, your guide can show you the dabbawalas, who deliver home-cooked lunches across the city.

Day 3 · Mumbai → Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Fly inland to Ellora and the Kailasa temple

Mumbai to Aurangabad airport: about 1 hour by air; airport to Ellora: about 45 minutes

Fly from Mumbai to Aurangabad airport in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, as the city has been officially called since 2023. On the drive to Ellora, see the hilltop fortress of Daulatabad, once the capital of the Tughlaq sultans.

Spend the afternoon at the Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of 34 Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves carved between about the 6th and 10th centuries, side by side along a basalt cliff. Begin with the Buddhist caves, including the three-storey Cave 12 and the 'carpenter's cave' with its ribbed vault.

Save your energy for Cave 16, the Kailasa temple, the largest rock-cut monument in the world. Commissioned in the 8th century by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I, it was carved from the top down out of a single mass of rock, a complete temple with courtyards, life-size elephants and towers. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays.

Day 4 · Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar → Ajanta

The painted caves of Ajanta

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Ajanta: about 100 km, 2.5 hours each way; shuttle bus for the last 4 km

Drive north-east to Ajanta. A compulsory eco-shuttle bus covers the last few kilometres from the Fardapur T-point to the caves, which are cut into the face of a horseshoe-shaped gorge above the Waghora River.

The 30 caves were carved by Buddhist monks in two phases, from about the 2nd century BC and again in the 5th century AD, then abandoned and forgotten until a British officer stumbled on them while hunting a tiger in 1819. Their murals, painted with mineral pigments, are the finest surviving paintings of ancient India: scenes from the Buddha's lives, princes and dancers, animals and palaces. Don't miss the Bodhisattva Padmapani in Cave 1.

Your guide focuses on the best painted caves, where lighting is kept low to protect the murals. Ajanta is closed on Mondays. Drive back to the city for dinner.

Bibi Ka Maqbara and fly to Mumbai

Aurangabad to Mumbai: about 1 hour by air

See Bibi Ka Maqbara in the soft morning light. Built in the 1660s by Aurangzeb's son, Azam Shah, in memory of his mother, it was modelled on the Taj Mahal and is often called the 'Taj of the Deccan'. If time allows, visit a Himroo or Paithani weaving workshop, the city's traditional silks.

Fly back to Mumbai and connect to your onward flight. Allow at least four hours between flights.

Tips for this journey

Weekly closures

Elephanta and Ajanta are closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. We set the order of your days around them, so tell us your arrival date early.

Best time to go

October to March is dry and pleasant. April and May are very hot inland. During the monsoon, from June to September, Ajanta's waterfall flows and the gorge is green, but the Elephanta ferry can be cancelled in rough weather.

Steps and walking

Elephanta has about 120 steps up to the caves. At Ajanta and Ellora you walk 2 to 4 km on paths and steps. Wear comfortable shoes that slip off easily, as some caves ask you to remove them.

Photography

Photography without flash is allowed in most caves; flash and tripods are not, to protect the paintings. Video cameras may need a separate ticket.

City name

Aurangabad was officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023. The airport, many signs and flight bookings still use Aurangabad.

Something else on your mind? Ask us on WhatsApp or use the form below. We reply within 24 hours.

Which days are Ajanta and Ellora closed?

Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. Elephanta is also closed on Mondays. We plan your itinerary around these closures.

Is Ajanta or Ellora better?

They are different. Ellora is about architecture, with the astonishing Kailasa temple carved from a single rock. Ajanta is about painting, with the finest ancient murals in India. If you can, see both.

How long do you need at Ajanta and Ellora?

Half a day at Ellora and most of a day at Ajanta, including the drive, is right for most visitors. This tour gives each its own day.

Are the flights included?

Yes, the economy flights from Mumbai to Aurangabad and back are included, as are the Elephanta ferry, entry fees and the Ajanta shuttle bus.

Can we drive from Mumbai instead of flying?

Yes, but it takes about 6 to 7 hours each way. Flying saves most of a day.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. You travel with your own car, driver and guides, whatever the size of your group. There are no fixed departures and no strangers on your trip.

Can we change the itinerary?

Yes. Dates, hotels, pace and stops can all be changed. Tell us what you have in mind and we will send back a fully costed version built around you within 24 hours.

How much should we tip the driver and guides?

A customary range is ₹300–700 a day for your driver and ₹500–1,000 for a full day with a guide, given at the end. It is voluntary. Our travel guide has the full table.

How do booking and payment work?

Your itinerary costs nothing to design and change. A booking is confirmed once we receive the advance payment and confirm in writing; the balance is due before travel as set out in your invoice. Cancellation charges depend on the hotels and services booked and are given to you in writing before you pay.

Do I need a visa for India?

Most visitors do. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries can apply online for an Indian e-Tourist Visa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least four days before arrival.
