The Indian Panorama luxury train journey covers more of India's rail network in a week than most travellers see in a month, moving from Delhi through the Himalayan foothills and the great plains and the ancient civilisations of the Deccan in a journey that is as much about the traversal as the destinations.
The Maharajas' Express — among the world's most decorated luxury trains for several consecutive years — was designed around a specific proposition: that the experience of India from a train window is categorically different from the experience of India from a road or air itinerary, because the train shows you the space between the famous places rather than just the famous places themselves. The agricultural landscape of Uttar Pradesh at dawn. The Vindhya range crossing in the afternoon. The first hint of the Deccan plateau as the train climbs away from the north.
The destinations on this itinerary are the canonical ones — Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur — but the quality of the experience at each is elevated by the arrival: stepping from a beautifully appointed train carriage directly to a private vehicle that takes you to the Taj Mahal before the gates open to the general public is a different category of encounter from arriving at the same monument by road from a hotel in the city.
Arrive at Delhi's Safdarjung Railway Station for boarding formalities and a traditional welcome before settling into your cabin. The train departs for Jaipur, with brunch served on board. On arrival, visit the City Palace galleries before an exclusive dinner at the historic Rambagh Palace Hotel, once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur.
Disembark to visit Amber Fort, a fusion of Hindu and Mughal architecture built from red sandstone and white marble, with a tour of the royal apartments and the Hall of Mirrors. Return to the train for lunch as it departs for Sawai Madhopur, gateway to Ranthambore National Park.
An early-morning jeep safari into Ranthambore National Park, once the private hunting ground of the Maharajas, with a chance of spotting tiger, leopard, and sloth bear among other wildlife. Return to the train for breakfast as it continues to Fatehpur Sikri, the red sandstone Mughal capital built by Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century and deserted within decades due to water shortages.
Arrive in Agra for a champagne breakfast with views of the Taj Mahal, the white marble mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal and among the most recognizable buildings on earth. The afternoon continues with a visit to Agra Fort, with an optional spa session available at a partner hotel before returning to the train, which departs overnight for Orchha.
An early breakfast before disembarking at Jhansi to reach Orchha by road, visiting Orchha Fort, built in the 1500s by the Bundela rulers, and taking a short tuk-tuk tour of the village. The train continues to Khajuraho in the afternoon for a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage temple complex, renowned for its intricately carved sandstone sculptures.
Arrive in Varanasi, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, for a visit to the Silk Weaving Centre, the ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath, and a scenic cruise on the river Ganges, ending with the magical evening Ganga Aarti ceremony at the ghats.
Breakfast and lunch are served on board as the train arrives back in Delhi at Safdarjung Railway Station, marking the end of your Indian Panorama journey.
