The Deccan Odyssey, the luxury train that anchors this itinerary on its southern sections, was designed specifically for the Maharashtra heritage circuit — Ajanta, Ellora, Aurangabad, the coastal forts of the Konkan — and the carriages were fitted out with reference to the princely states that once dominated this landscape. The experience of arriving at Aurangabad station to find a private vehicle waiting to take you to Ellora at dawn, before the gates open, is the kind of logistical arrangement that makes the difference between seeing a UNESCO World Heritage Site and actually experiencing one.
The northern sections of this journey, which use the Maharajas' Express, cover the Rajasthan circuit with the same combination of private access and unhurried pacing that makes luxury train travel a fundamentally different proposition from any other mode of Indian travel.
Check in at Mumbai Central Railway Station in the morning, with the train departing for Udaipur shortly after. Settle into your cabin and enjoy lunch and dinner aboard as the train rolls overnight toward Rajasthan.
Arrive in Udaipur and visit the City Palace complex, then enjoy a boat ride on Lake Pichola past Jag Mandir Palace. Dinner is served aboard the train as it continues toward Jodhpur.
Arrive in Jodhpur and visit Mehrangarh Fort, towering over the blue-washed old city, before lunch aboard the train as it continues into the desert toward Bikaner.
Visit Junagarh Fort and Lalgarh Palace, then head out to the sand dunes for a camel ride and sundowner cocktails as the desert light turns gold. Dinner and overnight aboard the train as it continues toward Jaipur.
Arrive in Jaipur and proceed to Amber Fort with an elephant ride to the entrance, followed by the City Palace and Hawa Mahal. Dinner is served at an exclusive venue in Jaipur before returning to the train.
Arrive in Sawai Madhopur for a morning tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park, then continue to Agra to see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, with an optional spa session aboard the train in the evening.
Enjoy breakfast aboard the train as it makes its final approach to Delhi, arriving to conclude the journey and connect with your onward flight.

Pricing is per person, based on double occupancy, and reflects current published Maharajas' Express fares, which are set by the train operator and subject to change. The train operates on a fixed seasonal schedule from October through April; departures sell out well in advance during peak season, so booking 6 to 12 months ahead is strongly recommended.
