Tamil Nadu is the one destination in India where the question is not whether to visit temples but which temples, in which order, with how much time at each — because the density and variety of Dravidian temple architecture in this single state exceeds anything else available in South or Southeast Asia.
The Temple Run itinerary moves through the great shrines of the Kaveri delta and the Tamil plains in an order designed to build comprehension rather than simply accumulate monuments. Kanchipuram first, because its temples represent the oldest continuously functioning religious sites in Tamil Nadu and the clearest expression of the early Pallava tradition. Mahabalipuram second, because its 7th-century rock-cut work is the conversation from which everything else in Dravidian architecture developed. Then the Chola heartland — Kumbakonam, Darasuram, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Thanjavur — where the tradition reached its most technically ambitious expression in the Brihadeeswarar and the other royal temples of the 10th and 11th centuries. Madurai last, because the Meenakshi temple is the culmination rather than the introduction, and arriving there after the earlier sites makes the complexity of its 33,000 sculpted figures something other than simply overwhelming.
The guide who accompanies this journey has been working the Tamil temple circuit for fifteen years and has a specific gift for making iconography intelligible without making it didactic — for explaining what a particular deity's hand gesture means in the context of the myth it's illustrating without making you feel you're in a lecture.
Land in Chennai and transfer to your hotel. Tamil Nadu's capital is worth a short look in its own right — Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world, makes for an easy, low-key first evening after a long flight.
Drive south to Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), a UNESCO World Heritage site and former Pallava-dynasty port. The Shore Temple stands directly on the Bay of Bengal, while the Pancha Rathas — five temples, each carved from a single block of granite — are one of the more remarkable feats of 7th-century stone craft anywhere in India.
A half-day drive to Kanchipuram, one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities and a major silk-weaving center. Visit Kailasanatha Temple, the oldest structure in the city, and the towering Ekambareswarar Temple, before an afternoon browsing the famous Kanchipuram silk weavers' workshops.
A longer drive day across the Tamil Nadu plains to Thanjavur, the former Chola capital. Arrive in the afternoon with time to settle in before tomorrow's full day at the Brihadeeswarar Temple.
A full day in Thanjavur. The Brihadeeswarar Temple, built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 AD and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest Hindu temples in India and a high point of Chola-era architecture — its 66-meter tower was, for centuries, among the tallest structures in the world. The afternoon covers the Thanjavur Maratha Palace and the Saraswathi Mahal Library.
Drive to Madurai, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India, and spend the afternoon at the Meenakshi Amman Temple — fourteen gopurams covered in thousands of painted sculptures, a sacred tank, and a constant flow of pilgrims that makes this one of the most genuinely alive religious sites on the entire circuit. Evening arati (the temple's closing ceremony) is worth timing your visit around.
Depending on your onward flight, transfer to Madurai Airport for a domestic connection, or take a private transfer back to Chennai for international departures. Both options are roughly comparable in convenience depending on your final destination.
