Ladakh's monastery circuit is the most concentrated exposure to living Tibetan Buddhist culture available outside of Tibet — and in certain respects more accessible, because the monasteries here operate without the political constraints that complicate monastic life across the border.
The seven monasteries covered in this itinerary — Thiksey, Hemis, Diskit, Lamayuru, Alchi, Stakna, Spituk — span the full range of Ladakhi Buddhist architecture from the 10th-century murals of Alchi, which preserve a style of painting that predates the Tibetan tradition that replaced it, to the 17th-century fortress monastery of Diskit in the Nubra Valley, whose 32-metre Maitreya statue looks north across the sand dunes toward the Karakoram range and the former trading routes that connected Ladakh to Central Asia.
The timing of this itinerary matters enormously: we schedule it to include at least one monastery festival — the Hemis Tsechu, the Diskit Desmoche, or the smaller gompa festivals of the Indus valley — because the masked Cham dances conducted at these events are the most complete expression of the Vajrayana Buddhist theatrical tradition and the most direct access to a ritual culture that has been continuous for several centuries. These are not performances for visitors but performances that visitors are welcome to witness.
Fly into Leh — one of the most spectacular approach flights in India, weather permitting — and transfer to your hotel. The entire day is intentionally unscheduled. Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,500 meters, and the single best prevention is simply resting on day one rather than rushing into sightseeing.
A gentle first sightseeing day, still respecting the altitude. Visit Leh Palace, a 17th-century miniature echo of Lhasa's Potala Palace, then the Shanti Stupa at sunset for sweeping views over the Indus Valley. The local market in the evening is one of the best places in India to buy genuine pashmina.
A full day on the monastery circuit. Thiksey Monastery, a twelve-story complex often compared to a miniature Potala Palace, is the largest in central Ladakh and home to a two-story Maitreya Buddha statue. Hemis Monastery, slightly further out, holds one of the richest collections of Buddhist art and thangka paintings in the region.
Cross Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world at over 5,300 meters, en route to the Nubra Valley. The landscape changes completely on the far side — cold desert sand dunes set against snow-capped peaks, with double-humped Bactrian camels as the area's signature, slightly surreal local detail.
A long but spectacular drive from Nubra to Pangong Lake, one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world, straddling the India-China border. The lake's color shifts through shades of blue and turquoise over the course of the day depending on the angle of the sun — arriving in time for late-afternoon light is worth planning around.
An early start to watch sunrise over the lake — arguably the single best moment of the entire week — before the drive back to Leh. The afternoon is left free for any last-minute shopping or simply resting after several intense days of altitude and driving.
Private transfer to Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport for your departing flight. Morning flights out of Leh are generally more reliable than afternoon ones, since mountain weather tends to turn by midday.
