The Indian Odyssey is the long version of India — the journey that covers the range of the subcontinent from the Himalayan north to the tropical south, from the Mughal architectural tradition to the Dravidian one, from the desert to the coast — and does so in the time that crossing this range actually requires.
India is not a country that rewards compression. The Indian Odyssey is built on the premise that the most authentic way to experience this subcontinent is to travel through it at the pace it imposes: the road from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, the train from Chennai to Madurai, the boat on the Kerala backwaters. The transitions between regions are part of the journey rather than interruptions to it, and the landscape changes that accompany them — from Rajasthan's desert to the Deccan plateau to the Tamil plains to the coast — constitute a geography lesson more vivid than anything a map provides.
The itinerary covers the Delhi-Rajasthan-Agra circuit in the north, the Hampi-Badami heritage in Karnataka, the Tamil temples of the south, and the backwaters and Ayurvedic culture of Kerala — four complete cultural worlds, each requiring a different orientation from the traveller and rewarding it with a different quality of experience. Coming home from this journey, most travellers find themselves planning the next one before they've unpacked.
Arrive in Delhi and check in at your hotel. In the evening, report to the railway station for the welcome ceremony and check-in formalities aboard the Deccan Odyssey, with a traditional welcome and refreshments as you settle into your cabin. The train departs overnight for Sawai Madhopur.
Arrive at Sawai Madhopur in the early morning and head straight into Ranthambore National Park for a jeep safari through one of India's best-known tiger reserves, also home to sambar deer, leopards, and crocodiles. Return to the train for lunch and a village safari in the afternoon, with high tea at the former royal hunting lodge, Sawai Madhopur Lodge.
Wake up in Agra and visit the Taj Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan, followed by the Itmad-ud-Daulah tomb (often called the "Baby Taj") and Agra Fort. Lunch is arranged at a city hotel, with the afternoon free for shopping or an optional spa session before returning to the train.
Arrive in Jaipur and visit Amber Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage hill fort, followed by Hawa Mahal and the City Palace complex. Lunch is at a city hotel, with the afternoon left for the colorful bazaars or a spa session, before an evening departure for Udaipur.
Arrive in Udaipur, known as the Venice of the East for its lakes set against the Aravalli Range. Visit the City Palace and its Crystal Gallery, then take a boat ride on Lake Pichola to Jagmandir Palace for a lavish lunch with live Rajasthani music. An evening heritage walk through the Old City precedes the overnight journey to Vadodara.
Arrive in Vadodara, former capital of the Gaekwad dynasty, and visit the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few completely preserved pre-Mughal Islamic cities in India. The train departs in the evening for Aurangabad.
Arrive in Aurangabad and visit the Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for the Kailasa Temple — the largest single monolithic rock excavation in the world, carved entirely downward from a single rock face. The train departs in the evening for the final leg to Mumbai.
Arrive in Mumbai by morning and disembark at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, marking the end of the journey. Transfer to your hotel or directly to the airport for your onward flight.
