Ladakh is the one destination in India that requires a completely different vocabulary to describe — because none of the usual adjectives apply at 3,500 metres in a landscape that looks like it was designed by someone who had never seen the rest of the planet.
The specific gift of this itinerary is that it takes you to Ladakh at the pace that Ladakh requires: with acclimatisation days built in as a non-negotiable, with time in Leh before the higher passes, and with a guide who has been working this terrain long enough to know that the most extraordinary things here happen not at the famous viewpoints but in the silences between them — the monastery at Thiksey at 4 AM when the monks are chanting and the dawn light is coming off the Stok Kangri above.
The Nubra Valley section of this journey is where Ladakh becomes genuinely surreal: sand dunes in a desert at 3,100 metres, Bactrian camels grazing beside a turquoise river, an ancient monastery on a clifftop above a valley that was once the main route of the Silk Road. The Pangong Lake dawn — two colours of blue, one the sky and one the water, and the line between them visible only because one is slightly darker — is the image people bring back from Ladakh more often than any other, and the reality of it, at this altitude and in this silence, exceeds the image considerably.
Fly into Leh and transfer to your hotel. As with any high-altitude itinerary, day one is intentionally unscheduled to allow your body to begin adjusting to Leh's elevation above 3,500 meters before any activity begins.
A gentle second acclimatization day covering Leh Palace and the Shanti Stupa at sunset, with sweeping views over the Indus Valley. The local market in the evening is a good first taste of Ladakhi culture before the more active days ahead.
The trip's signature adventure day: a half-day white-water rafting run on the Indus River from Phey to Nimo, around 12 to 36 kilometers downstream of Leh. Grade II-III rapids carry you past ancient monasteries and small riverside hamlets — genuinely exciting, but accessible to first-time rafters with an experienced guide. Return to Leh by early evening.
A full day on the monastery circuit. Thiksey Monastery, a twelve-story complex often likened to a miniature Potala Palace, houses a two-story Maitreya Buddha statue, while Hemis Monastery holds one of the richest collections of Buddhist art in the region.
Cross Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world at over 5,300 meters, into the Nubra Valley. The cold desert landscape on the far side, complete with double-humped Bactrian camels against snow-capped peaks, feels like a different planet from Leh.
A long, spectacular drive from Nubra to Pangong Lake, one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world. The lake's color shifts through a striking range of blues over the course of the day, depending on the light.
An early sunrise at the lake before the drive back to Leh. The afternoon is left free, a deliberate buffer after several intense days of altitude, driving, and activity.
A genuinely free day — recommended for anyone whose body needs an extra rest day after the rafting and the high passes, but equally good for a final round of shopping for pashmina and local handicrafts in Leh's main market.
Private transfer to Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport for your departing flight. Morning flights are generally more reliable than afternoon ones, since mountain weather tends to turn by midday.
| Tier | Accommodation Category | Price Per Person |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 3-star hotels in Leh, standard camps at Nubra and Pangong | From $1,950 |
| Comfort | As listed above — The Grand Dragon Ladakh, deluxe Hunder camp, Pangong Retreat Camp | From $2,450 |
| Premium | Chamba Camp Thiksey by TUTC in place of standard Leh nights, upgraded glamping throughout, private rafting guide | From $3,750 |
Pricing is per person, based on double occupancy, and varies with season, current accommodation rates, and group size. This itinerary is specifically built around the June-to-August rafting season, narrower than the April-to-November window for our standard Ladakh monastery circuit — outside this window, the rafting day is not possible and we'd recommend the 7-day version instead. All prices are estimates based on current published rates and are confirmed in writing before booking.
