Mumbai
Arrival — Gateway of India & Marine Drive at Twilight
Arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Transfer to your South Mumbai hotel. Afternoon: the Gateway of India — the great basalt arch built in 1924 to commemorate King George V's visit, now the symbolic entrance to the city. Boat ride to Elephanta Island (if time permits) — 7th-century rock-cut caves containing magnificent Shiva sculptures. Sunset walk on Marine Drive — the C-shaped seafront boulevard where Mumbai exhales at the end of every working day.

Mumbai
Colonial South Mumbai → Dharavi → Bollywood
Morning walk through Mumbai's extraordinary colonial quarter with your guide: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Victoria Terminus) — the most elaborate Victorian Gothic railway station ever built, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's great buildings. The High Court, the University of Mumbai library tower, and the Rajabai Clock Tower. Afternoon: a guided walking tour of Dharavi — one of Asia's largest informal settlements and arguably India's most remarkable micro-economy, producing $650 million in goods annually. This is not poverty tourism — it is an education in Indian entrepreneurship. Evening: Bollywood night option — a live Hindi film premiere or stadium show at one of Mumbai's great venues.

Fly to Aurangabad — Ajanta Caves Afternoon
Morning domestic flight to Aurangabad (1 hour). Check in to your heritage hotel. Afternoon drive to the Ajanta Caves (100km, approx 2 hours) — 29 rock-cut Buddhist monasteries and prayer halls carved into a horseshoe-shaped gorge in the Sahyadri Hills between the 2nd century BCE and 6th century CE. The murals inside are among the finest examples of ancient Indian painting in the world — Buddha figures, Bodhisattvas, court scenes, and decorative borders in ochre, lapis, and verdigris. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Return to Aurangabad for dinner.

Ellora Caves → Daulatabad Fort → Bibi Ka Maqbara
Full day at the Ellora Caves complex (30km from Aurangabad) — 34 monasteries, temples, and halls representing three religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism) carved from the same basalt escarpment between the 6th and 11th centuries. The centrepiece: the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) — a monolithic temple carved downward from the top of a cliff, with 7,000 workers removing 200,000 tons of rock over 150 years to create a free-standing stone replica of Mount Kailash. The largest monolithic rock excavation in the world. Afternoon: Daulatabad Fort — the remarkable 12th-century fort that famously defeated every siege for centuries. Visit Bibi Ka Maqbara — the Mughal empress's tomb, sometimes called the Poor Man's Taj.
