Kashmir Valley — Paradise Found

The Mughals called it paradise on earth. They were not wrong. Eight days through the vale of Kashmir — sleeping on a hand-carved walnut houseboat on Dal Lake, riding a cable car to 13,780 feet above Gulmarg, trekking through the meadows of Pahalgam, and watching the morning mist lift from the mountains. India's most beautiful valley, at its most extraordinary.

Arrival in Srinagar — Dal Lake & Shikara Ride
Arrive at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar. Transfer to your heritage houseboat on Dal Lake — the extraordinary floating world of hand-painted wooden houseboats that has been the defining Kashmir experience for over a century. Settle in, then a shikara (gondola-like wooden boat) ride across the lake at sunset — through the floating vegetable gardens, past the willow-lined channels and the houseboat colony, with the Zabarwan mountains reflected in the still water. The light on Dal Lake at dusk is extraordinary.

Mughal Gardens → Shankaracharya Temple → Old City
Morning visit to the Mughal Gardens along Dal Lake's eastern shore — three extraordinary formal gardens built by the Mughal emperors in the 16th and 17th centuries: Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. Terraced lawns, chinar trees, Mughal fountains, and the mountains as backdrop. Afternoon: Shankaracharya Temple — perched on a hill above Srinagar, with panoramic views of the entire vale of Kashmir. Old City walk: the wooden mosques and shrines of the old Srinagar quarter, the covered Makhdoom Sahib shrine, and the kashmir artisan workshops where shawl weavers and paper-mache craftsmen work.

Drive to Gulmarg — Asia's Highest Gondola
Drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg (50km, approx 1.5 hours) through apple orchards and pine forests. Gulmarg — Meadow of Flowers — is a high-altitude resort at 8,700 feet surrounded by the Pir Panjal range. Take the Gondola (cable car) — Phase 1 to Kongdoori (8,530 ft) and Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (13,780 ft) — one of the highest cable cars in the world, with views of Nanga Parbat and the Himalayan chain. In winter: world-class skiing. In summer: meadow walks, horse riding, and the extraordinary clarity of the mountain air. Return to Srinagar houseboat by evening.

Awantipora Ruins → Pahalgam — The Valley of Shepherds
Drive to Pahalgam (95km, approx 2.5 hours) via Awantipora — the ruins of two 9th-century Kashmiri Hindu temples, relatively unvisited and extraordinarily peaceful in the morning light. Pahalgam sits at 7,200 feet in the Lidder Valley, at the confluence of two mountain rivers. The town is surrounded by pine forests, meadows, and Himalayan peaks — the classic Kashmir landscape that 19th-century British officers called 'Little Switzerland.' Afternoon at leisure: a walk along the Lidder River, a pony trek to Baisaran Meadow (the mini-Switzerland viewpoint above town), or simply sitting by the river.

Aru Valley → Betaab Valley → Chandanwari
Full day excursion from Pahalgam into the surrounding valleys. Aru Valley (12km) — a wide pastoral valley of meadows, glacial streams, and the backdrop of the Himalayan range, almost perfectly undeveloped. Betaab Valley (15km from Pahalgam) — named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here, a lush valley of pine and birch where the Lidder River runs fast and clear. Chandanwari (16km) — the base camp for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, with snow bridges on the river in early summer.

Drive Through the Mountains — Sonamarg Arrival
Drive back through Srinagar and north to Sonamarg (87km, approx 2.5 hours). Sonamarg — Meadow of Gold — is at 9,000 feet, the last major valley before the Zojila Pass that leads to Ladakh. It is named for the golden light that the sun casts on the meadows in late afternoon. The Thajiwas Glacier is a short pony ride from town — a glacier accessible without mountaineering equipment, with crevasses, meltwater lakes, and the silence of high altitude. Evening in Srinagar or overnight in Sonamarg.
