Meghalaya — Land of Living Roots

Meghalaya means the Abode of Clouds. It earns the name. The wettest place on earth, with waterfalls on every hillside and rivers so clear the boats above them appear to float in air. The Khasi people here have trained the roots of living trees across rivers for twenty years to create bridges that strengthen as they grow. The sacred forests they have protected for centuries are primary rainforest. This is India at its most extraordinary and least visited.

Guwahati → Shillong
Arrival — Drive to Shillong, the Scotland of the East
Arrive at Guwahati Airport. Transfer immediately to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, 100km south across the Meghalaya plateau (approximately 2.5 hours). The drive is the first revelation: the landscape rises sharply from the flat Brahmaputra plains into rolling pine-forested hills, and within an hour you are in a completely different India — cooler, greener, quieter, with a quality of light unlike anywhere in the subcontinent. Check in to your Shillong heritage property. Afternoon walk through the Police Bazaar and Ward's Lake — the heart of this distinctly non-Indian-feeling city.

Don Bosco Museum — Shillong Peak — Elephant Falls — Evening in the City
Full Shillong day. Morning at the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures — the finest museum of Northeast Indian tribal cultures in existence, housed in a dramatic seven-storey building with 17 galleries covering the art, dress, traditions, and history of the Northeast's extraordinary diversity of tribes. The rooftop skywalk gives the best panoramic view of Shillong. Shillong Peak (1,965m) — the highest point in Meghalaya, with views across the Khasi Hills and, on a clear day, the plains of Bangladesh below. Elephant Falls — a three-tiered waterfall in a forested gorge named by the British for an elephant-shaped rock (destroyed in an earthquake). Evening: explore Shillong's remarkable café culture and live music scene — the city has been called the Rock Capital of India for its extraordinary tradition of Western guitar music.

Shillong → Cherrapunji (Sohra)
The Wettest Place on Earth — Seven Sisters Falls
Drive from Shillong to Cherrapunji (Sohra), 60km south (approximately 2 hours). Cherrapunji holds the world record for the highest rainfall in a single month (9,300mm in July 1861) and is close to the record for highest annual rainfall on earth. The landscape reflects this: waterfalls everywhere, deep gorges, limestone caves, and a lushness of extraordinary intensity even in the dry season. Visit the Nohsngithiang (Seven Sisters) Falls — seven separate streams cascading from a 315-metre cliff in parallel — one of India's most spectacular waterfalls. Mawsmai Cave — a 250-metre-long limestone cave of stalactites and stalagmites. Eco Park at Cherrapunji — with views across the gorge to Bangladesh.

Cherrapunji → Nongriat — Living Root Bridge
Trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge
The centrepiece of any Meghalaya visit. The Living Root Bridges of the Khasi people are created by training the roots of the Ficus elastica tree across rivers and streams over 15–20 years, creating natural living bridges that strengthen with age and can support the weight of 50 people. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat is the most famous — two bridges, one above the other, separated by 10 metres, both made entirely from living roots, deep in a rainforest gorge with a crystal clear stream. The trek to reach it descends 3,500 steps through dense jungle and takes approximately 2.5 hours each way. Hard. Completely worth it. Stay overnight in a basic eco-guesthouse at Nongriat village to experience the gorge at dawn.

🚶 The trek involves 3,500 steps down and 3,500 up — good fitness required. Alternative: a single-deck living root bridge reachable by a shorter walk at Riwai village for those who prefer a gentler option.

Return Trek — Asia's Cleanest Village — Glass River
Early morning in the gorge — the jungle at dawn with mist in the trees and the sound of the stream. Climb back up (allow 3 hours). Drive to Mawlynnong — officially designated Asia's cleanest village by Discover India magazine, a Khasi village of extraordinary neatness, with bamboo dustbins at every corner, swept paths, and immaculate flower gardens. The Balancing Rock nearby — a large boulder perched on a tiny stone base — is geologically remarkable and looks physically impossible. Then to Dawki — the Umngot River is so extraordinarily clear that boats appear to be floating in air rather than water. This is one of the most photographed rivers in India and the reality matches the photographs.

Sacred Forest — Khasi Monoliths — Return to Shillong
Morning: the sacred Mawphlang forest — a grove of ancient trees maintained by the Khasi people as a sacred space since ancient times. No leaf or stone may be removed. The forest has been protected for so long that it is primary rainforest — trees of enormous age and girth, with a biodiversity not found in surrounding secondary-growth forests. Your Khasi guide explains the beliefs and taboos that have made this conservation work for centuries before conservation became a concept. Nearby: the Khasi megalith field — ancient standing stones, dolmens, and menhirs placed by Khasi ancestors to mark significant lives and events, creating a landscape that feels profoundly ancient and completely non-touristy.

Laitlum Grand Canyon — Cathedral Church — Departure Prep
Final full day in Meghalaya. Laitlum Canyons — a dramatic valley southeast of Shillong where the Meghalaya plateau drops steeply away in a series of forested ridges and canyons. On a clear morning, the view is extraordinary: layer after layer of green hills fading into the haze over the Bangladesh plains. The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians in Shillong — a spectacular Neo-Gothic structure that is one of the most beautiful churches in Northeast India, and which reflects the extraordinary Christian heritage of the Khasi people. Afternoon at leisure: the local Shillong market for Khasi weaving, bamboo products, and the local smoked meats and cheeses.

🌟 TripRoutes India Insider Tips
  • Meghalaya is one of the most extraordinary and least-visited destinations in India — this is genuinely off the beaten path for most international visitors
  • The Nongriat trek (3,500 steps) is the highlight of the package and is worth every step — allow a full day, start early, and hire a local porter if you have heavy luggage
  • The Umngot River at Dawki is genuinely as clear as the photographs — the effect of seeing boats apparently floating in mid-air rather than water never loses its magic
  • Mawlynnong is a real village, not a tourist performance — the cleanliness is a genuine community value, not a show for visitors
  • October to April is the best time — winter (December to February) has clear skies and comfortable temperatures around 10–15 degrees Celsius in Shillong
  • June to September is the monsoon season — when the waterfalls are at their most spectacular and the landscape turns an almost surreal green; experienced travellers who don't mind rain often prefer this season
  • This package combines perfectly with the Assam & Kaziranga package — spend 10 days in Assam then 8 days in Meghalaya for the complete Northeast India experience
